Breast Lift Surgery

Over the years, factors such as pregnancy, nursing and gravity take their toll on a woman's breasts. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts often lose their shape and firmness and begin to sag. A breast lift surgery, or mastopexy, is a cosmetic procedure designed to raise and reshape sagging breasts for a more youthful appearance. Mastopexy can reduce the extra skin and give the breasts their former firmer shape and feel. In some cases, breast implants are inserted in conjunction with a breast lift, which afford patients the ability to increase breast size in addition to obtain a shapelier, firmer appearance. Where are the incisions placed?
A common method of lifting the breasts involves three incisions. One incision is made around the areola. Another runs vertically from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease underneath the breast. The third incision is horizontal beneath the breast and follows the natural curve of the breast crease. Less invasive incisions include those around the areola only and the circumareolar incision with the vertical incision or "lollipop" incision.

How is a Breast Lift Surgery performed?
After the plastic surgeon has removed excess breast skin, the nipple and areola are shifted to a higher position. Skin that was formerly located above the areola is brought down and together beneath it to reshape the breast. This may be done in conjunction with a breast implant to get the patient to the size she desires if there is significant loss of volume following pregnancy and breast feeding or with weight loss.
